Scientists have found that more than 20% of people are addicted to junk food

A team of scientists analyzed data collected in 281 studies from 36 countries and came to disappointing conclusions. According to the information received, approximately 14% of adults and 12% of children around the world are addicted to ultra-processed foods. This is the name for ready-to-eat food that was produced in factories or fast food establishments from refined or highly refined ingredients using synthetic emulsifiers, thickeners, artificial flavors, colors and other additives. These products include instant noodles and chips, sweet soda and ice cream, nuggets and french fries.

Researchers say that addiction to all of the above can be compared to alcohol addiction. In both cases, the symptoms are the same: severe cravings, lack of control over the amount and prolonged use despite numerous side effects, such as obesity, poor physical and mental health and overall quality of life.

According to scientists, the mechanism of addiction to ultra-processed food repeats the pattern in which a person becomes addicted to alcohol and nicotine. The neurotransmitter dopamine, which is also called the hormone of joy, plays an important role both here and there.

‎Быстрые carbohydrates and fats, when ingested, trigger the same surge in dopamine in the brain as alcohol and nicotine. Based on behavioral and biological parallels, we believe it is possible to assume that foods high in these components may be included in the list of addictive substances,‎, say scientists from the US, Brazil and Spain.
