A recent study published in JAMA Network Open provides new insights into low-carb diets and their long-term impact on weight loss. Scientists have found that diets that are rich in vegetable fats and proteins, as well as carbohydrates from whole grains, are more effective for long-term weight loss than popular low-carb diets with starchy or animal products.
The research analyzed data collected between 1986 and 2018 from 100,000 adults without health problems. Respondents provided information about their weight and diet every four years. These results revealed that a diet that consists of healthy carbohydrates, as well as plant-based fats and proteins, helps maintain a stable result in weight control.
βThe results of the work can significantly influence the understanding of the long-term effectiveness of low-carb diets. It is important that public health initiatives focus on promoting a healthy diet that includes consumption of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products,β said Qi Sun, senior author of the study and assistant professor of nutrition at Harvard Medical School.
