The New Year holidays can be a real challenge for pets: guests, plenty of treats, lots of sparkles on the Christmas tree and the roar of fireworks outside the windows. A DON 24 correspondent spoke with veterinarian Yulia Melnikova and found out how to protect animals on New Year’s Eve.
No rain
“If cats live in the house, I strongly recommend not buying rain. As soon as the New Year holidays begin, cats are often treated, where every second person vomits and send them for an X-ray, and it turns out that the cat has a foreign object inside — it’s raining,” says Yulia Melnikova.
According to her, rains rarely leave the body on their own, and surgery is often necessary.
Glass toys
The veterinarian noted cats’ love for jumping on the Christmas tree and throwing off glass toys. When falling, Christmas decorations can break and injure a pet.
They tear the oral cavity
During the New Year holidays, the number of terminally ill animals increases. Firecrackers explode, dogs grab them, and firecrackers tear their mouths apart. There are also many cases when dogs run away and get hit by cars on New Year’s Eve when they hear the sound of firecrackers, the veterinarian shares.
According to Yulia Melnikova, veterinary clinics should be open around the clock on New Year’s Eve, as there are a lot of four-legged patients, and people, in turn, should not detonate firecrackers.
Unfortunately, I can’t influence this (people blowing up firecrackers — Ed.), added the veterinarian.
Plastic toys
According to the veterinarian, small plastic toys should not be hung on the Christmas tree, because animals can swallow them.
Pugs like to swallow everything; they’re like vacuum cleaners, the interviewee added.
Yulia Melnikova noted that if there are animals, it is better not to dress anything up, as pet toys can be dangerous.
They are very stressful
According to the veterinarian, animals react negatively to the lights on the Christmas tree, to sparklers and to loud noises.
“Cats are very stressful just like dogs. Cats should not be stressed at all; a lot of things can happen to them due to stress, for example, an idiopathic disorder (an inflammatory process of the bladder, which consists in the absence of infectious agents — Ed.),” Yulia Melnikova said.
Kebab, Olivier and alcohol
Yulia Melnikova often took her shift on December 31 and worked on New Year’s Eve. According to her, there were a lot of “drunk” patients among her four-legged patients.
“Very often people come to drink beer or other alcoholic beverages to animals. People also often feed their pets kebab, Olivier. All this leads to pancreatitis, gastritis or poisoning,” says the veterinarian.
The hosts filled one of Yulia Melnikova’s patients with half a liter of vodka.
“When drunk, the owners usually think that the animal also wants to drink — to celebrate the holiday, so they start feeding and watering them,” said the veterinarian.
“There was a time when a cat ate enough of rain and its owner was drinking vodka. The cat was vomiting, the owner thought he had distemper, but this disease does not exist in cats. All this happened on New Year’s Eve, January 1, we managed to operate on him, then he was treated for poisoning in the hospital,” Yulia Melnikova shared.
In her opinion, you can install a Christmas tree at home, but, for example, not decorate it at all.
“The main thing is not to hang up the rain. If it’s raining and there’s a cat at home, it’ll just eat it. Cats love rain madly,” added the veterinarian.
